Single-payer national health insurance based on Medicare would prevent this abuse of Florida's patients and small businesses by multi-level for-profit health insurance companies by providing publicly financed, privately delivered health care for all Floridians at lower cost.

Under the PPACA bill, 23 million Americans will still be uninsured in 2019. Surging health-care costs will not be contained. As long as we have private insurers we will never be able to achieve truly universal or affordable care. Compared with other developed nations, the United States pays twice as much for health care and yet ranks 49th among male and female life expectancy. By replacing the inefficient patchwork of private insurers with a streamlined single-payer, our nation can save about $400 billion annually, enough to cover everyone, with no co-pays or deductibles. The House single-payer bill, HR 676, will be introduced again this month. In the 2009-10 Congress, there were 12 co-sponsors from New York, and Nita Lowey, D-Harrison, recently said that when the same bill is reintroduced, she will sign on.

Anthony Weiner (D-N.Y.) will introduce, in the House Energy and Commerce Committee, an amendment to the so-called Tri-Committee health care bill. The amendment would replace the private health insurance industry with a single-payer national health insurance program.

Will serious health reform meet the fate of the scorpion and the turtle? In that fable, the scorpion pleads with the turtle to carry him across a river. The turtle resists, fearing the scorpion's sting, but the scorpion reassures him that he'd do nothing so foolish, since both would drown if he did. Finally the turtle agrees. Halfway across, the scorpion betrays his promise with a lethal sting. As the turtle begins to drown, he asks why he took both their lives. "It's just who I am," the scorpion replies.

You are still sending faxes and lots of them. This morning we had sent about 22 thousand faxes to the White House and members of Congress. You can take your pick of faxes, from chastising Republicans for intransigent obstructionism to asking Obama to do the right thing. Each one allows you to add your comments. Each one is sent immediately. Each one is free to you.

In light of the arrest this week of 8 activists including several doctors during the Senate Finance Committee's healthcare reform "Roundtable," this call to action is even more important.
